Day 1

The construction work at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is changing the look of the track. Here we see the area of the new control tower and other buildings already prepared for the next phase.

Brian Barnhart and Phil Casey of PDM Racing did a presentation on updates to the IRL race chassis. They showed changes made for the 1999 season as well as changes made over the past two years.
Christy Whalen, owner of the Gear Shed, explains in great detail how an IRL six speed gearbox works as member of the press look on. Whalen's Gear Shed is an outgrowth of the IRL and its need for local vendors to supply the racing community.

The work in each of the shops continued even with media visitors. Here members of the Brant Racing Number 3 work on a car for the 83rd running of the Indianapolis 500.
The look of the Number 3 Brant Racing machine has a strange yet familiar appearance much like a certain NASCAR Team..

A stop in the Gasoline Ally garage area was a chance to meet Jim and Tom Kelley. Media members got a close look at Kelley Racing's machine that is piloted by Scott Sharp.
The setting for the presentation of the IMS trophy with Eddie Cheever's image on it was the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum. The museum, open year round, is one of the best in the country and well worth a trip to the Indianapolis area.

Here is a photograph of the new Eddie Cheever's new Infiniti power race car. Cheever will run the new power plant at the 83rd Indy 500.
Eddie Cheever Jr. is presented the IMS Trophy with his likeness on it. Doing the honors is Bob Jenkins, the voice of Indianpolis Motor Speedway, ESPN commentator.
