The Hot Rod: An American Icon

America has always been considered the center of the automotive culture for the world. This is most apparent when you talk about the hot rod. This is typically an American idea. No other place on earth could claim anything like the hot rod.

Where did this very odd mode of transportation develop? Well, after World War II, the pent-up demand for autos created a void filled by this new type of car, the hot rod. The hot rod or street rod was an older body style (usually pre-WWII) that was equipped with a powerful engine and stripped of any extra sheet metal like fenders and running boards. It was built for speed. It was most often used in events that started out as street racing and ended up being our present day drag racing sport.

It was a cultural phenomenon that developed its own language, clothing style and code of conduct. The hot rod was much more than just a fast car, it was a way of life. Today the hot rod is one of those rare items that inundate our society and make America the wild collection of things that we call "us". This American Icon is representative of the romance Americans feel for their cars.

The auto is part and parcel of a way of life in this country. This is kinetic art in its purest form. This is beauty in motion. This is the hot rod. We have gathered a collection of photographs from museums and car shows to give you our visitors a cross section of cars to view and to download to your computer for later use. "Big Daddy" Ed Roth, the famous Hollywood car builder, created this fiberglass body and special frame for what he thinks a "hot rod" should be like.
