Whenever
you apply for credit, a computer analyzes your billing history,
payment history and other data that appears on your credit
report.
The results are a credit score, which is the basis for your
interest rate. To improve your credit score before applying
for a credit card follow these easy steps. Order you credit
reports and review them.
There
are three credit report providers in the United States.
Obtain a copy from each and review them carefully. Notify
the credit bureaus in writing if there are changes that
need to be made.
Review
all of the information on the report. Did you have accounts
with all of the creditors listed? If not challenge in writing
each of the errors you find on your credit report.
Send
your letter by registered mail so that there is a record
of them getting the correspondence. Make sure credit bureaus
have your correct address. If credit bureaus have more than
one address or and incorrect address they will think that
you move around a lot, which in turn can lower your score.
Don't use a post office box for your home address. This
often signifies instability to credit-scoring companies.
Reduce the number of open credit lines. Cancel cards you
no longer use, even if you have paid off your balance in
full.
Lenders view open accounts, even with zero balance, as potential
unpaid debts. Do not apply for credit at a lot of different
places. This lowers your score each time an inquiry is made
on your credit status.
If you are rejected, challenge the score and ask to talk
with someone about the report. Be reasonable and interested
in clearing the problem, not angry or outraged.
